How do Calling cards work?

When you purchase a Calling card, the card is pre-charged with a certain credit which is usually the same as that of the card value ($5, $10, $20 or more). For a $5 card, you will be able to call your home country and speak for about 50 minutes or in some cases even 200 minutes. Usually most Calling cards for Europe and some countries in Asia will charge 2 cents per minute where as for other countreis it will be 8 cents or more per minute.

Where can I buy a Calling card?

Buying a Calling card is very easy. You can buy it in local stores (grocery store / convenience store) as well as on-line. If you buy the calling card on-line, you will have to make the purchase using a Credit or a Debit card. You can also buy the cards over the phone, just call any one of the contacts mentioned on the web sites that sell Calling cards.

When buying a Calling card through a web site, you will have to open an account. You will have to provide an email address as well as your Credit card information. You will also have to provide a number where you can be reached. Once you open the account, a representative from the Calling card company will call you to confirm your identity. After that you can freely buy the cards whenever you want. Note that the Calling card company rep will call you just for the first time.

How to use a Calling card?

The use of a Calling card varies based on the seller, but generally you will have to follow the following steps:
  1. Using a touch tone phone, dial the access number (usually toll free or local access)

  2. At the prompt, enter your PIN number (sent to you via email or on the back of your phone card)

  3. Your balance for this card is normally announced at this point

  4. You are then asked to dial your destination phone number. Normally this will be the full international dialing code. (International Access Code – 011 followed by the country code followed by your city code and then the actual number. For example, lets say you are currently in the US and you want to call your home in London, England. So, you will first press 011, then press country (England) code, then press city (London) code and then your home number.)

How many times can I use a particular Calling card?

you can use a Calling card as long as there is some balance remaining on the card. For example, lets say for a $5 card you get 75 minutes. You then make a call and speak for 20 minutes and then hang up. Now, you have used 20 minutes from your 75 minutes and so you have 55 minutes remaining. You can continue using the card until the remaining minutes is used up or the card expires (which ever comes first). For a more detailed information about minute billing, please check the terms and conditions when you buy a card.

What are rechargeable Calling cards?

Rechargeable Calling cards enable you not to buy a new Calling card every time the balance on your Calling card is exhausted. Rechargeable cards are cards that can be recharged with a dollar amount. The way it works is you will have to dial a particular number provided by the Calling card company. You will then be asked how much amount you want to put on your card. You can specify the amount and that particular amount will be charged on your Credit / Debit card. You will get the minutes corresponding to that dollar amount.

The obvious benefit of a rechargeable Calling card is that you do not need to access the Calling cards web site or go to a shop to buy a new card every time your card is used up.

What is a speed dial?

Many Calling card companies provide the option of speed dial. Speed dial is basically storing the numbers where your frequently call, such as a number in your home country. When using a speed dial, you do not have to remember all the numbers such the Calling card number as well as the number you have stored. Just by pressing a few keys you will be directly connected to that particular number. If you like, you can assign one number for your toll-free calling card acces number.

How do I determine the best Calling card for my country?

In order to make a wiser choice you might want to consult with your friend/family from the same home country who have been in the US longer than you have. They might have a better idea which web site (or even what type of card) provide a card with better quality and price.

If you want to do your own research, please consider these questions below (you should be able to find the answer in every web site that sell a Calling card):

  • How much is cost of the card?

  • How many minutes can you talk with that price tag?

  • Pay attention that calling a cell phone will cost you more than calling a home phone. Making a call to a smaller city (in your country) will also cost you more than making a call to a bigger city

  • How is the quality of the card? Usually you can see some stars next to the card name that describe the quality of the card. The more the number of the stars, the better the quality of the card.

  • Does the card provide a free connection fee?

  • Are there any maintenance charges?

  • Is there any expiration date? How long?

  • How is the minute billing work? Billing is sometimes done by the minute, or every two minutes or even by the second. Please check with the card specific details.
